TIPS FOR GETTING DRESSED DURING PREGNANCY

Updated: Apr 20, 2022

Getting dressed during pregnancy isn’t always a fun task. I have a few tips that I’ve learned along this journey to share with you that can make it a little easier and help you look good and put together.

First and foremost, I’d recommend shopping your own closet. You might be surprised with how many pieces you own that can fit your bump. Pieces like blazers, cardigans, cotton dresses, joggers, and leggings are some examples of pieces that you can use for a while or even during your whole pregnancy.

More tips

Invest in basics so you have options to wear throughout the pregnancy, such as a black dress, black leggings, white maternity top. You can even create a small pregnancy capsule. See what works best for your body type and go with it. It’s easier than going through your whole wardrobe every time you’re going to get dressed.

  • Select a color palette so you can coordinate your pieces and create more outfits.

  • Layering is always a good option. Even during spring and summer, when wearing fitted dresses I always had an oversized cardi or a blazer over it.

  • Leggings were my number one piece in the first and second trimesters. I got pregnant in November so they were my best friends for fall and winter. They’re comfortable and so versatile. You can pair them with boots, booties, sneakers, loafers… the options are endless! They’re a must in any pregnant woman’s closet. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a good pair of leggings. One of my favorites is from Amazon and under $30! They’re a great find! I have them in three colors.

  • Blazers are an essential piece in my closet year-round. Adding a blazer elevates your outfit instantly. During pregnancy, I wore blazers a lot! Paired them with dresses and leggings.

  • Dresses: I love wearing dresses during any season! They’re easy to pair, to dress up and down, and are comfortable. I tried to invest in bump-friendly dresses instead of maternity, so I could wear them after pregnancy.

I found it pretty easy to find bump-friendly dresses. From Target to Nordstrom, from all price points, you have great options available.

  • If you have an important event such as a wedding that requires a more formal look, don’t hesitate to rent.

  • Avoid anything tight. Bras, pants, belts, and anything that could decrease circulation in the legs.

  • Go for comfortable shoes: in the first and second trimester you might still reach for your favorite shoes but, in the third trimester it gets harder to put them on and to take them off, so try to switch for more comfortable options with low or no heels, slip-ons (mules are a great option!!) Sneakers and flat sandals were my go-to!

  • One thing I purchased in the beginning of the pregnancy and have been wearing since then are these maternity shorts to wear underneath dresses. They’re great because they hide underwear lines and help me feel my belly supported. Linked here and here.

Below you’ll find my favorite stores that I’ve shopped during pregnancy:

Pink Blush Maternity – Tons of options and affordable prices!

Spanx – The best leggings and mama shorts!

Loft – Denim and workwear options!

Amazon – Affordable options!

Target – Affordable maternity options and tons of bump-friendly dresses!

Petal & Pup – The cutest bump-friendly dresses for all occasions!

H&M – One of my favorite stores and they have a good maternity selection.
